SUMMARY:An Evening Of Old Songs Sung By 'Soft Lap'
DESCRIPTION:‘I have fallen so completely in love with this book… just one of the finest\, most covetable things around’ Katherine Rundell \nBest-selling historian and author Amy Jeffs\, musician Natalie Brice and illustrator Gwen Burns have created Old Songs\, a reimagining of ten traditional British ballads. Each artist applied her primary trade: word\, music and image respectively\, but each also influenced the others’ work. \nIn this live performance\, Amy will offer historical insights and readings from the stories\, while Gwen will showcase animations created from the illustrations and Natalie will lead them both in mesmerising sung renditions of the earliest known melodies of the ballads themselves. Old Songs fuses short stories\, histories\, lyrics and illustrations in an enthralling reimagining of traditional folk ballads. Sunday Times Bestselling historian Amy Jeffs and Illustrator Gwen Burns combine forces to create a rich compendium\, singing of travel\, mystery\, magic and the essential urges of humanity. \nFeaturing iterations of fairy tales and sinister descendants of Greek myths and bible stories\, as well as a cast of lesser-known characters with names like Tam Lim\, Child Wynd and Maisery\, Old Songs threads a tapestry of Britain’s landscape\, history and cultures. At the base of hills we can visit to this day\, elf queens kidnap hapless poets and carry them through rivers of blood; and at the foot of a tree whose offspring still stand in the forests of Northumberland\, a girl mimes combing the hairless head of a dragon who was once her brother. \nDr Amy Jeffs is an author\, artist and medievalist. During her PhD in Art History at the University of Cambridge\, she co-convened a project researching medieval badges and pilgrim souvenirs at the British Museum. She then worked in the British Library’s department of Ancient\, Medieval and Early Modern manuscripts. Now a Somerset-based author\, she illustrates her books with print and paper cutout. Storyland: A New Mythology of Britain was published in 2021. It was a Sunday Times bestseller and a Waterstones Book of the Month\, as well as being shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year. Wild: Tales from Early Medieval Britain was published in 2022. Its audiobook\, illustrated with 7 original songs\, was named Audiobook of the Week by the Guardian and the Times. \nAmy will be discussing her work with Bookshop manager Paul Armfield on the following night Friday 19th.

SUMMARY:An Evening In The Company of Amy Jeffs
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Amy Jeffs is an author\, artist\, and medievalist whose work delves deeply into the art and culture of the Middle Ages. She completed her PhD in Art History at the University of Cambridge\, where she co-convened a research project on medieval pilgrim souvenirs in collaboration with the British Museum and also worked extensively with the manuscript collection of the British Library. \nNow based in Somerset\, Jeffs brings her scholarship to life through a unique fusion of words and images\, illustrating her own books with linocuts\, wood engravings\, and paper cut-outs. Her debut\, Storyland: A New Mythology of Britain\, became a Sunday Times bestseller\, was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year\, and was named a Times Historical Fiction Book of the Year. \nHer second book\, Wild: Tales from Early Medieval Britain\, explores ancient conceptions of wilderness through medieval tales of exile\, monsters\, and the natural world. This was followed by Saints: Legends of Heroes\, Humans and Magic\, and most recently Old Songs\, a collection that reimagines fairy tales and reawakens shadowed descendants of Greek myths and biblical stories. Featuring figures such as Tam Lin\, Child Wynd\, and Maisery\, Old Songs weaves a vivid tapestry of Britain’s landscape\, history\, and culture. \nAcross its pages\, elf queens abduct poets at the foot of hills we can still climb today; rivers of blood run beneath their worlds. In a forest of Northumberland\, beneath a tree whose lineage endures\, a girl gently mimes the act of combing a dragon’s bald head—a creature who was once her brother. (The author will be performing these songs with her band ‘Soft Lap’ the previous night also at Medina Bookshop).

SUMMARY:Lucy Lapwing author talk 'Love is a Toad'. Part of the IOW Biosphere Festival
DESCRIPTION:Most of us love nature; it’s a great source of fascination\, comfort and awe. But we’re living in a time of great loss\, witnessing decline of biodiversity all around us. \nIn her talk\, Lucy will explore this two sided coin\, exploring our relationship with the natural world\, along with plenty of nerdy wildlife encounters. \nLove is a Toad \nNature makes us feel things. It sparks awe\, curiosity and a sense of beauty and community. But as wildlife around us declines and disappears\, murkier feelings rise up: guilt\, detachment and fear for nature’s plight. For many years\, Lucy Lapwing wrestled with these tangled emotions. So\, in an attempt to make sense of this dance between joy and grief\, she decided to go on a journey. \nIn Love Is a Toad\, Lucy traverses meadows\, bogs and hedgerows with her fellow nature enthusiasts\, where she digs down into our relationship with the natural world. Over the course of a year\, she meets bucketfuls of wildlife – Blackbird and Oak\, slugs and puffballs\, waterlilies\, Dung Beetles and toads – as she roams across the UK. \nFrom a river swim to wanders through woodlands\, with every journey\, Lucy explores how nature makes us feel\, from wild grief and anger through to soaring joy and indefatigable hope. At once a celebration and an invitation to reflect\, Love Is a Toad prods and pokes at our connection to the natural world\, exploring its complexity in all its muddiness\, messiness and wonder. \n‘Tender\, connected and considered’ – Chris Packham\n‘Luminous’ – Freya Bromley\n‘Extraordinary’ – Dr Amir Kahn\n‘Uplifting\, defiant\, galvanising’ – Sophie Pavelle\n‘A tender\, rambunctious song of undilutable adoration’ – Amy-Jane Beer
