Her first book with Pen & Sword was The Real Sherlock Holmes: The Hidden Story of Jerome Caminada.\nAngela has a PhD in history and her thesis is on the evolution of Victorian and Edwardian police detective practice. She is associate lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. Angela is a member of the Crime Writers’ Association and the Historical Writers Association. But somehow she sneaks into several chapters. If her daughter\, Princess Beatrice\, is known as her mother’s companion\, she may be less familiar as Governor of the Island\, living in Carisbrooke Castle and responsible for the foundation of the Carisbrooke Castle Museum\, one of the Island’s jewels. She has her place in its history\, as does her sister\, artist and rebel Princess Louise. Given more space is Isabella de Fortibus\, known as ‘Lady of the Isle’. She was the last Lord of the Island\, ruling almost as a queen from Carisbrooke Castle in the 13th century\, in defiance of the king the other side of the Solent. Before her was 9th century Queen Osburga\, of Arreton Manor\, mother of Alfred the Great. But the book is not only about royalty\, even though it includes visits from Russian\, Austro-Hungarian\, and French Empresses. The Island had earlier withstood French invasions\, following Romans who left their villas\, two of them now excavated and open to the public.\nThe Island is sometimes known as ‘Dinosaur Isle’\, and that chapter begins the book\, not so much about the creatures\, but those who hunted for\, and found\, their fossils. His family history however\, did not stop him from deciding at the age of six that he was going to conduct. \nAnthony knew academia was not for him and battled to persuade his teachers and even his own parents that he did not need educating at expensive private schools. In the end\, they agreed and he left school early to attend the Royal College of Music. His career has seen him conducting many famous orchestras and soloists\, travelling the world and working in genres from pop bands such as The Scorpions to Bizet’s opera Carmen. \nHis thirty-three year tenure at Phantom of The Opera in London and Music Directorship of two orchestras\, plus his continuing association with Cunard and Katherine Jenkins has meant that although he is at an age when people retire\, he continues to be busier than ever. \nThis is a story of perseverance\, hard work\, joy\, laughter\, anecdotes and passion\, in a career that he would (almost) do for free!

DESCRIPTION:Johanna was researching Isabella de Fortibus for one of her much enjoyed lectures back in 2015. She could not find a complete work about the life of the Lady of the Wight. We told her ‘You will have to write one yourself’ and so began years of enjoyable research for Johanna. Eventually Johanna was not able to continue. She and I had worked together for many years at Carisbrooke Church Shop in Newport\, and I had read several of the completed chapters. I took it over!\nPenny Keevil.\nBrought up in the Cathedral City of Wells\, I had lived alongside the heart of the mediaeval city and had attended Sunday School at the Cathedral. I accessed many places not open to the general public and developed a love of them all. Johanna has provided me with immense pleasure with her lectures and study days on local buildings over many of my 52 years living on the Island. Such topics\, as Island Houses; her research on Isabella\, the Lady of the Wight; the history of Carisbrooke Castle and her research on the local House of Industry\, which relates to my own family history and research on the Workhouse System. Her study days at the Castle given by the Museum have been a joy filling me with her enthusiasm and ability to bring the past vividly to life for us. I am delighted to be able to be given this brilliant book a chance to be widely read.\nLin Watterson

DESCRIPTION:Leeds-born Jake Thackray (1938-2002) is increasingly recognised as being one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century\, a unique talent\, whose songs are full of poetry\, wit\, irreverence and humanity. He became known to millions through his regular appearances in the 1960s and 1970s on programmes such as Braden’s Week and That’s Life. During his career he appeared over 1000 times on television and radio\, performed for the royal family and toured the world. His distinctive appearance\, deadpan delivery\, talent for storytelling\, clever wordplay\, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some. Since his death in obscurity there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work. His admirers include Jarvis Cocker\, Alex Turner\, Don Black\, Thea Gilmore\, Cerys Matthews\, Benjamin Clementine and Neil Gaiman. \nJohn Watterson is the UK’s leading performer of Jake’s songs. As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention and performed at Latitude\, Cropredy and the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He has also played for Jake’s family. John has appeared many times on radio\, including Radio 4’s Great Lives\, a Radio 2 documentary on Jake presented by Cerys Matthews and Radio 3’s The Verb hosted by Ian McMillan. Most recently he appeared on TVs Meet the Richardsons with Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont. \nWith the full cooperation of the Thackray family\, John and co-author Paul Thompson have just written the first ever biography of Jake. Even cemeteries get a mention.
