SUMMARY:'My Name Is Not Matilda' BOOK LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:A captivating\, touching\, fascinating and beautifully written autobiography. \nMiranda was brought up in a Norfolk farming family and went to boarding school at the age of seven. Being Head of House was not the envied position one might imagine it to be. She had various dead end jobs\, waitressing\, cleaning and housekeeping\, and then studied Dress Design. For three years in the 1960’s\, she was a model living in Chelsea. She married and spent two years with her husband building their own boat\, a trimaran. She had never sailed before but they then set off on an extraordinary voyage across the Atlantic Ocean spending 27 days alone at sea. After four years sailing around the West Indies they returned to England. Later\, alas\, the marriage collapsed. \nFor the last 40 years she has lived on the Isle of Wight working as an artist\, exhibiting\, running workshops and delivering Reminiscence sessions in residential care homes. \nShe writes movingly about her work\, her personal life\, describing details of her travels\, her sailing adventures\, her love of nature and of bringing up two boys on her own; then falling in love again. \nMiranda has written poetry and songs in the past but this is her first book. With candour she shares her thoughts and feelings about events in her life from the post war years to the present day.

SUMMARY:'THE ISLE OF WIGHT: WOMEN\, HISTORY\, BOOKS AND PLACES' - Book Launch with Author Susanna Hoe
DESCRIPTION:The Isle of Wight: Women\, History\, Books and Places does not contain a chapter about Queen Victoria and Osborne House\, which are\, perhaps\, all some know about the Island. But somehow she sneaks into several chapters. If her daughter\, Princess Beatrice\, is known as her mother’s companion\, she may be less familiar as Governor of the Island\, living in Carisbrooke Castle and responsible for the foundation of the Carisbrooke Castle Museum\, one of the Island’s jewels. She has her place in its history\, as does her sister\, artist and rebel Princess Louise. Given more space is Isabella de Fortibus\, known as ‘Lady of the Isle’. She was the last Lord of the Island\, ruling almost as a queen from Carisbrooke Castle in the 13th century\, in defiance of the king the other side of the Solent. Before her was 9th century Queen Osburga\, of Arreton Manor\, mother of Alfred the Great. But the book is not only about royalty\, even though it includes visits from Russian\, Austro-Hungarian\, and French Empresses. The Island had earlier withstood French invasions\, following Romans who left their villas\, two of them now excavated and open to the public.\nThe Island is sometimes known as ‘Dinosaur Isle’\, and that chapter begins the book\, not so much about the creatures\, but those who hunted for\, and found\, their fossils. It has also been called ‘Ghost Island’\, and there are plenty of those\, and of witches burnt at the stake\, and smugglers – all aptly named ‘Outsiders’. There is a chapter on ‘Irregular Relations’ which includes a smuggler who climbed her way to the top of French society via a royal Comte\, and the delightfully-named\, fast-living\, 16th century Dowsabel Mills\, who also opened a girls school. Nuns and philanthropists find their place\, as does a notable pioneer photographer and a now recognised marine engineer\, powerboat racers\, aviatrixes\, sailors\, those campaigning for women’s suffrage\, and a spy or two\, one of whom was nearly hanged. That is not to forget writers and artists such as the French Impressionist Berthe Morisot. Her delicate and evocative watercolour is not only a memento of her 1875 Cowes honeymoon\, but also adorns the book’s cover. \nKindly sponsored by Red Funnel

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: 'THE BERMONDSEY MURDER' by Angela Buckley
DESCRIPTION:When Patrick O’Connor went missing in August 1849\, his friends were suspicious. The London dock worker was last seen in the company of Swiss-born Maria Manning and her husband in Bermondsey. By the time police officers discovered his remains under the kitchen floor\, the couple had fled. \nThis shocking crime sparked a race against time to bring these cold-blooded killers to justice. After almost a decade of unsolved murders in the capital\, could Scotland Yard detectives find the murderous pair and restore public confidence in their sleuthing skills. The search for the Mannings spread beyond England and was closely followed by the Victorian public\, including prominent writers such as Charles Dickens who was haunted by the case and later immortalised some of the key characters in Bleak House\, which was published just four years later. To this day\, the Bermondsey Murder remains a legendary crime in the history of Scotland Yard and mid-nineteenth century London. \nUsing primary source material\, this book delves into the background of the Mannings\, including Maria’s link with royalty and Frederick’s previous criminal activities. It also offers a full biography of the victim\, Patrick O’Connor\, and his shady past\, as well as presenting the original court documents which shed further light on the case and the Mannings’ relationship. \nDr Angela Buckley is a historian and writer specialising in Victorian crime and police history. Her work is featured in national magazines and newspapers\, and on radio\, podcasts and TV. Her first book with Pen & Sword was The Real Sherlock Holmes: The Hidden Story of Jerome Caminada.\nAngela has a PhD in history and her thesis is on the evolution of Victorian and Edwardian police detective practice. She is associate lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. Angela is a member of the Crime Writers’ Association and the Historical Writers Association. Originally from Manchester\, Angela divides her time between Cowes and Bermondsey.

SUMMARY:'Letters To Margaret - Confessions To My Late Wife' Hunter Davies Author Talk ----- (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:At the end of almost every day of their fifty-five years of married life\, the publicity-shy author Margaret Forster would ask her naturally gregarious and outgoing husband Hunter Davies to describe to her the highlights of his working day spent in the worlds of journalism and publishing. In the six years that have elapsed since Margaret’s death\, Hunter has continued these conversations with his wife\, regaling her with accounts of the events and developments in his life – domestic\, social\, romantic\, book-related\, health-related and others – through a sequence of ‘Letters to Margaret’. Whether recounting adventures in online dating\, the pleasures and pitfalls of buying a new house by the seaside\, the trauma of major operations on his heart and gall bladder\, a chance encounter at a book-signing session that led to a new romantic attachment\, or a visit to A&E when he was supposed to be watching the World Cup final\, these twenty-three letters weave together strands of confession\, self-mockery\, anecdote and touching remembrance of married happiness with Margaret. \nLetters to Margaret reveals Hunter Davies raging happily against the dying of the light in his late eighties\, and seeking consolation for life’s frustrations and disappointments through a sustained conversation with the woman he shared his life with for more than half a century.

SUMMARY:'A Drowning Tide' Book Launch with author Sarah Lawton
DESCRIPTION:A Drowning Tide is an unpredictable\, gripping story of toxic families\, dangerous secrets and the past catching up with the present.\nA Drowning Tide is Sarah Lawton’s debut crime novel\, set on the Isle of Wight where the author grew up and introducing protagonist Merry\, a reclusive fifty-something woman who finds solace in writing cryptic crosswords as a living and the pleasure of wild swimming. Merry’s life\, though\, is about to take a very different and unexpected path. When her neighbour\, Lucas Manning – son of her late best friend\, Julia – goes missing\, Merry finds herself caught up in the search for his whereabouts\, questioned by police and forming an unlikely alliance with a private investigator called Gareth to look for him. But what Merry doesn’t know is that finding Lucas will expose all her own deeply buried secrets\, resulting in mortal danger and a thrilling twist.\nAuthor Sarah Lawton is one of 3% of the population who are aphantasic\, and therefore unable to form mental images of real or imaginary people\, places or things. For Sarah\, her lack of visual imagination has drawn her to pursue a creative career and has been helpful to her writing rather than a hindrance. She seeks out real places to describe in her own words\, and her memories are visceral rather than visual\, relating to feelings\, sensations and smells\, which all contribute to the striking detail of her writing. Needing to write about somewhere she knew and still drawn to the water\, Sarah chose to set her debut crime novel on the island where she grew up\, where the scent of the sea is never far away and\, whilst picturesque\, has\, like most places\, its dark side\, too.\nThe novel is an unputdownable brainteaser\, and readers can follow Merry’s journey whilst puzzling over the cryptic clues throughout.

SUMMARY:'THE LAUGHING ROBOT' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:In a near-future world where robots are becoming increasingly prevalent\, recently widowed social worker Anna grapples with grief\, betrayal\, and an uncertain future. As she explores the potential of AI and robotics to revolutionize eldercare\, Anna’s personal life is upended when her late husband’s will reveals shocking secrets. \nSeeking a fresh start\, Anna impulsively purchases a run-down cottage on the Isle of Wight\, hoping to build a new life of independence and purpose. But with family tensions rising\, strange events unfolding on the island\, and her own mental health called into question\, Anna soon realizes that escaping her past won’t be so simple. \nAs Anna navigates the challenges of her new life\, she finds herself drawn into an experimental robot companionship program. When the enigmatic ‘Henry’\, and later his more advanced successor ‘Henry2’\, come to stay with her\, Anna must confront her growing dependence on technology\, her fears about aging and autonomy\, and the very nature of what it means to be human. \nWith her son Stanley’s investment in the burgeoning robot industry and the mysterious ‘Sunset Clause’ looming over her\, Anna increasingly questions who she can trust. Caught between the pull of the island’s rugged natural beauty and the push of invasive technology\, Anna struggles to maintain her sense of self in a world that seems to be leaving her behind. \nThe arrival of the powerful Professor Sir John Westerby and his Citizen UK charity on the island raises the stakes. As Anna witnesses the tragic consequences of the battle for control over the lives of the elderly\, she must decide what risks she is willing to take to protect those she loves. \nWhen the government announces a radical plan to transform the Isle of Wight into ‘Home Farm’ – a designated haven for the elderly complete with mandatory robot caregivers – Anna and her fellow ‘guinea pigs’ from the robot companionship program find themselves at the center of a national debate. Faced with an uncertain future and a society increasingly willing to discard its elders\, Anna must navigate a treacherous web of political and corporate interests while fighting to maintain her dignity\, autonomy and sense of self. \nAs the situation on the island spirals out of control and dark secrets come to light\, Anna realizes the true scope of the forces aligned against her. With ‘Home Farm’ in lockdown\, her health failing\, and her loved ones out of reach\, Anna faces the ultimate test of resilience. In a thrilling climax\, she must rally her strength and ingenuity for a daring escape – aided by unlikely allies both human and machine. \nThought-provoking and poignant\, The Laughing Robot is a story of one woman’s journey through loss\, disillusionment\, and renewal in an age where the lines between human and machine are blurring. Julia Ross weaves an immersive near-future tale that explores the social impacts of emerging technologies while capturing the enduring human needs for connection\, purpose\, and hope in the face of change. Fans of literary sci-fi and emotionally engaging women’s fiction will find a moving\, compelling story that raises profound questions about the future of aging\, family\, and our relationship with technology.

SUMMARY:'Victory in Australia: the Remarkable Story of England's Greatest Ashes Triumph 1954-55'\, Author talk by Richard Whitehead
DESCRIPTION:The Ashes series of 1954–55 marked a watershed moment in the history of English cricket. Under the leadership of Len Hutton\, the national team’s first professional captain\, one of the greatest\ngroup of players ever to represent England won an Ashes series in Australia for the first time in more than 20 years. It is a feat that has been repeated only four times in more than 70 years since. But Hutton’s men had to overcome the additional obstacle of losing heavily in the first Test – only one England team has managed to win an overseas Ashes series after such a monumental setback. \nThe names of the cricketers who locked horns in 1954–55 resonate down the decades – Hutton’s team included Denis Compton\, Frank Tyson\, Brian Statham\, Trevor Bailey\, Godfrey Evans\, Peter May and Colin Cowdrey. Among their Australian opponents were Ray Lindwall\, Keith Miller\, Neil Harvey and Richie Benaud. In the 1950s\, these players were not just elite sportsmen\, they were household names. \nAn Ashes series for the ages is brought thrillingly to life in this momentous slice of sporting and social history. \nRichard Whitehead worked in newspapers for nearly 40 years\, spending 21 of them in a variety of senior roles at The Times\, including spells in the sport\, books and obituaries sections. He has been writing obituaries for Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack since 2012. His previous books include The Cup: a Pictorial Celebration of the World’s Greatest Football Tournament\, The Times on the Ashes and Warne in Wisden. \nMonday 14th July 6.30pm\nTickets £5 (refundable on the purchase of the book) \n‘Elegant and evocative … the definitive word on England’s most astonishing Ashes tour ever’ – Matthew Engel \n‘A wonderfully full-bodied account\, alert to every human and social as well as cricketing nuance’ – David Kynaston \n‘A masterpiece of research and narrative skill’ – Leo McKinstry \n‘An outstanding addition to cricket’s literature … Richard Whitehead marvellously recreates one of the great tours of the 20th century’ – Duncan Hamilton

SUMMARY:An Evening With Larry Lamb (at Island Sailing Club)
DESCRIPTION:London\, Thursday 8th May 2025: Larry Lamb has today announced a UK book tour that sees him travel from Billericay in Essex to Barry Island in South Wales\, in support of his debut novel\, All Wrapped Up.\nThe extensive tour itinerary gives a nod to Larry’s much-loved alter-ego\, Mick Shipman\, from acclaimed sitcom Gavin & Stacey\, and will include festival appearances\, book signings and ‘audience with’ events across the UK.\nLarry’s novel\, All Wrapped Up is set amidst political turmoil on a Caribbean island. It follows the story of Killian Wilde\, the first assistant director\, who is determined to see his film through – if the chaos doesn’t consume them first. Between managing an impossible lead actor\, navigating power struggles on and off set\, and a crew member vanishing under mysterious circumstances\, the production is at risk of falling apart.\nBlending sharp dialogue\, rich behind-the-scenes detail\, and the grit of a top-notch crew\, All Wrapped Up is a compelling portrait of a non-blockbuster filmmaking under fire – where the real battle isn’t just on screen.\nInformed by his years of experience in film and television\, Larry Lamb gives an inside look at the industry; the trials\, tribulations\, and hard-won successes of producing a piece of cinema.\nLarry Lamb said: “For the past 17 years\, it’s been such an honour to play the ever-popular Mick Shipman\,\nGavin’s dad. Fans of the show often ask me what it’s like to work on a TV or film set – and I hope that my novel gives them a glimpse into that world.” \nLarry Lamb is a storyteller like no other. Some of my fondest memories of being on theset of Gavin and Stacey were listening to Larry tell incredible stories.” – James Corden \n“Hooray\, at last\, an insight into the unsung hero\, at the helm of making filming magic. This intriguing story illuminates the tightrope day-to-day tasks of a 1st assistant director and the crew\, on and off a film set – that has never been touched on before. Mr Lamb pulls no punches. It is speedy\, sexy and amusingly truthful. I loved it.” – Celia Imrie

Coming from a world where what’s supposed to be left turns out to be right\, and what’s supposed to be right turns out to be left\, the characters stumble into playful misunderstandings and funny discoveries at every turn. With charm\, humor\, and warmth\, their story shows how even in the strangest situations\, friendship\, laughter\, and kindness can help everyone feel at home in a new land. \nThis self-published book was created in collaboration with Odessa-born illustrator Yana Barabash\, and together we hope to celebrate the growing friendship between two nations. Through humour and relatable cultural differences — just like in the story — we aim to help children and adults understand one another a little better. \nThe book also highlights and promotes the beautiful artwork of Yana Barabash\, who arrived on the Island as a refugee. The original idea of Marusya and her pets coming to the Isle of Wight was hers\, and we are delighted to share her talent with a wider audience.

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH 'Conscious Upgrade: Reprogram Your Subconscious\, Activate Your Superconscious' with Jane Giles
DESCRIPTION:Jane\, who lives and works on the Isle of Wight\, has spent more than 20 years supporting clients through anxiety\, phobias\, low mood\, confidence issues and life transitions. Throughout her career\, she has repeatedly heard clients say\, “Why has no one ever explained this to me before?” \nThat question inspired her to write Conscious Upgrade – a practical\, accessible manual designed to help people understand how their thinking works\, and how to consciously use it to create lasting change. \nWritten in the same clear\, everyday language Jane uses in her therapy sessions\, Conscious Upgrade explains how the brain “uploads” the information we feed it\, and how this shapes behaviour\, emotions and outcomes. \nDrawing on two decades of clinical experience\, Jane shows readers how to retrain neural networks and reprogramme the subconscious into a version they consciously choose. \nJane says\,\n“This book is about empowerment.\n“When people realise they are not at the mercy of their subconscious patterns\, real change becomes possible.” \nThe book is structured as a practical manual\, meaning readers can dip into the sections most relevant to them rather than reading cover to cover. \nIt addresses over 30 of the most common issues Jane has worked with: anxiety\, depression\, social anxiety\, phobias\, confidence\, self-esteem\, motivation\, addiction\, health anxiety\, sleep issues\, IBS\, pain management\, unwanted habits\, fears (including flying\, needles\, spiders and dogs)\, relationship challenges\, weight loss support\, smoking cessation and performance improvement. \nEach chapter is supported by free hypnotherapy audios available on YouTube\, transforming the book from something to read into an immersive experience. \nOne client describes the impact of Jane’s work\,\n“Working with Jane completely changed my life. She helped me understand my anxiety in a way that finally made sense\, and gave me tools I still use every day.\n“Difficult relationships that once felt overwhelming are now easy to navigate. I feel calmer\, more confident\, and in control.”
