SUMMARY:'Leeward' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:For whatever we lose\, it is our self we find in the sea.\n‘An extraordinary work\, absolutely breathtaking … it beggars belief’ Conn Iggulden\n‘Profound\, intricate\, artful. I urge you to sail into this storm’ A. J. West\, Sunday Times bestseller \n1800. HMS Ulysses mutinies off Trinidad and vanishes into the Caribbean. No one knows how many of the crew are left alive or what the mutineers plan to do with the vessel. \nCaptain Hiram Nightingale is a veteran of the wars which have raged throughout Europe and the Americas for the last decades. But a grand victory at the Battle of the Nile comes at a devastating cost. Plagued by wounds both physical and mental\, he attempts to recover by accepting command of HMS Scylla. His task is to hunt down the mutineers and bring the ship and crew to justice. \nHowever\, it soon becomes clear that the Ulysses is just one danger in an immense web. Nightingale finds himself in the middle of a network of secrets that will affect everyone onboard the Scylla. He has to battle against the perils of the war-torn seas\, a crew who he fears does not accept him\, and meddling\, powerful figures from the past. \nAnd in the centre of all this\, his new lieutenant\, the popular Arthur Courtney\, stirs up long repressed feelings. On his journey\, Nightingale must confront his own demons. For it seems\, during his dangerous adventure\, Nightingale’s greatest enemy might be himself. \nA deeply poignant tale of naval warfare\, political intrigue and a love that stands tall in an unaccepting world. Perfect for fans of Hornblower\, Sharpe and Outlander. \nPraise for Leeward\n‘An utterly unique and intriguing addition to the genre of Age of Fighting Sail fiction. Her protagonist\, Captain Hiram Nightingale\, is at once heroic and vulnerable\, a man who is wounded in multiple ways\, all perfectly believable. This is a fresh and welcome new entrant to the world of maritime fiction’ James L. Nelson\, author of the Isaac Biddlecomb series \n‘A grand naval adventure of the days of sail\, with mutiny\, political machinations\, and a scarred captain who has internal foes. In an utterly authentic voice\, Katie Daysh brings to life the terrifying power of the sea\, and the bonds of both love and duty that tie a captain to his ship\, and his men’ Damion Hunter\, author of Shadow of the Eagle

SUMMARY:4 Authors Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Overlooked – a novel by Ian Caro \nIan Caro was born in Castleford and lives on the Isle of Wight. He has worked as a stage manager\, a lighting designer\, a ghost writer and a lawyer\, and currently provides pre-publication legal advice to a number of national and regional news publishers. \nGeorge Orwell imagined a world where Big Brother is always watching. But what if Big Brother doesn’t care and no one is watching? \nAlex Winstone lives his life as if he’s constantly being watched. The Overlooked is the story of what happens when he discovers he’s not. \nSet in a world much like our own\, where morals are malleable and facts are whatever anyone can be persuaded to believe\, this pithy novel is a study in anxiety and an examination of truth in the age of tabloid churnalism. The obsessive\, insistent\, fractured narrative is edgy and tense – Nineteen Eighty-Four reimagined by the lovechild of Chuck Palahniuk and Ernesto Sabato. \nOut Of Darkness – selected poems by Barrie Singleton \nBarrie Singleton was born angry. Conceived without consultation and born without consent\, he has carried a disproportionate sense of injustice through almost eight decades. Age has mellowed him but his resolve has hardened – a latter-day Quixote sallying forth in verse to tilt at corruption\, hypocrisy\, false prophets and poor poets. \nOut Of Darkness takes forty-two tilts at philosophical thought (Part 1\, Deep Interstices)\, political animals (Part Two\, Whither?) and pretentious poets (Part Three\, Satirical Ballads). The style varies from poem to poem but the whole coheres around Barrie’s wry wit\, acute observation and irreverent railing against thoughtless thought. He knows his onions\, his science\, his English ad his human conditions\, and he abuses them all gloriously in this Quixotic selection. \nThe Shadowing Of Combfoot Chase- by Hillard Morley \nHaving studied Literature at Durham University\, Hillard Morley Hillard Morley taught Drama and English for many years. In 2016 she made the decision to turn to writing full time\, and since then her work has been published in literary journals worldwide. In 2020 she was shortlisted for the Independent Arts ‘Jot’ Award and in 2018 she won the OWT Short Fiction Prize. The Shadowing of Combfoot Chase is her first novel. \nRooted in concerns about surveillance capitalism and told in polyphonic\, dark and witty episodes\, the novel reveals a society under threat. Thought-provoking\, frightening and funny in equal measure\, The Shadowing of Combfoot Chase asks us to consider the consequences of privacies being eroded through hyper-surveillance\, and challenges us not to take our freedoms for granted. \nFive Things I Can See – by Fran Heath \nFran Heath is the author of bildungsroman novel\, Pencil Lead. She’s also written and illustrated a rhyming picture book – How We Choose to Play – and a book of dreams – Unconscious Adventures.\n\n\nHer second novel\, Five Things I Can See\, is a snapshot into one woman’s struggles with the anxieties of modern life\, motherhood and personal fulfilment. It will be published later this year.

SUMMARY:Anthony Inglis\, author talk with two course meal
DESCRIPTION:Fizz on Arrival \nFollowed by 2 Course Dinner \nRoasted Chicken Breast\, Mushroom & Madeira Sauce\, Roasted New Potatoes\, Buttered Broccoli \nor \nTomato\, Roasted Pepper & Basil Risotto\, Parmesan Crisp\, Pea Shoots \nDesserts \nZesty Lemon Posset\, Forest Fruit Compote\, Shortbread \nor \nSelection of British & Continental Cheese\, Biscuits & Homemade Chutney \nDescribed by the Manchester Evening News as “One of Britain’s most popular conductors”\, Anthony Inglis was born into the Royal Air Force with nine of his relatives\, senior and distinguished pilots in the service. His family history however\, did not stop him from deciding at the age of six that he was going to conduct. \nAnthony knew academia was not for him and battled to persuade his teachers and even his own parents that he did not need educating at expensive private schools. In the end\, they agreed and he left school early to attend the Royal College of Music. His career has seen him conducting many famous orchestras and soloists\, travelling the world and working in genres from pop bands such as The Scorpions to Bizet’s opera Carmen. \nHis thirty-three year tenure at Phantom of The Opera in London and Music Directorship of two orchestras\, plus his continuing association with Cunard and Katherine Jenkins has meant that although he is at an age when people retire\, he continues to be busier than ever. \nThis is a story of perseverance\, hard work\, joy\, laughter\, anecdotes and passion\, in a career that he would (almost) do for free!

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Book Launch: 'The Lady Of The Wight: The Life Of Isabella De Fortibus' by Johanna Jones
DESCRIPTION:Johanna was researching Isabella de Fortibus for one of her much enjoyed lectures back in 2015. She could not find a complete work about the life of the Lady of the Wight. We told her ‘You will have to write one yourself’ and so began years of enjoyable research for Johanna. Eventually Johanna was not able to continue. She and I had worked together for many years at Carisbrooke Church Shop in Newport\, and I had read several of the completed chapters. I took it over!\nPenny Keevil.\nBrought up in the Cathedral City of Wells\, I had lived alongside the heart of the mediaeval city and had attended Sunday School at the Cathedral. I accessed many places not open to the general public and developed a love of them all. Johanna has provided me with immense pleasure with her lectures and study days on local buildings over many of my 52 years living on the Island. Such topics\, as Island Houses; her research on Isabella\, the Lady of the Wight; the history of Carisbrooke Castle and her research on the local House of Industry\, which relates to my own family history and research on the Workhouse System. Her study days at the Castle given by the Museum have been a joy filling me with her enthusiasm and ability to bring the past vividly to life for us. I am delighted to be able to be given this brilliant book a chance to be widely read.\nLin Watterson

SUMMARY:FAKE THACKRAY Concert and Book Launch (RESCHEDULED)
DESCRIPTION:Leeds-born Jake Thackray (1938-2002) is increasingly recognised as being one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century\, a unique talent\, whose songs are full of poetry\, wit\, irreverence and humanity. He became known to millions through his regular appearances in the 1960s and 1970s on programmes such as Braden’s Week and That’s Life. During his career he appeared over 1000 times on television and radio\, performed for the royal family and toured the world. His distinctive appearance\, deadpan delivery\, talent for storytelling\, clever wordplay\, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some. Since his death in obscurity there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work. His admirers include Jarvis Cocker\, Alex Turner\, Don Black\, Thea Gilmore\, Cerys Matthews\, Benjamin Clementine and Neil Gaiman. \nJohn Watterson is the UK’s leading performer of Jake’s songs. As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention and performed at Latitude\, Cropredy and the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He has also played for Jake’s family. John has appeared many times on radio\, including Radio 4’s Great Lives\, a Radio 2 documentary on Jake presented by Cerys Matthews and Radio 3’s The Verb hosted by Ian McMillan. Most recently he appeared on TVs Meet the Richardsons with Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont. \nWith the full cooperation of the Thackray family\, John and co-author Paul Thompson have just written the first ever biography of Jake. The book is now approaching completion and will be published later this year or early next. \nThe story of Jake’s own life is a truly fascinating one\, from his humble working-class childhood in Leeds\, being brought up under the watchful eye of a devout Catholic mother and bullying father\, through to his lonely death in self-imposed obscurity in South Wales\, and a simple gravestone near the tomb of a Catholic martyr. \nIt is the story of a shy\, bright and creative boy whose life would be transformed by the Jesuits and the post-war grammar school revolution\, which would take him to one of England’s top universities. It is the story of a risk-taker who would head abroad\, fall in love with French culture and choose to live in Algeria during war-time. It is the story of an inspirational\, creative\, unorthodox teacher who wrote songs for his own amusement\, and took his guitar into the classroom. \nIt is the story of a northern provincial whom the BBC executives in London eventually recognised as hot property\, but whose relationship with show business would never be easy. It is the story of a man who turned his back on fame and ploughed a different path. It is the story of a man who was genuinely loved and hugely admired by many\, even after he let them down. It is the story of a man who left us with ninety or so extraordinary\, idiosyncratic songs which deserve to be heard\, sung and studied for decades to come. \nIt is the story of man who was a fantasist\, and a master storyteller who would never have believed that his own story was worth telling. He was wrong. \nTestimonials \nSir Richard Stilgoe\n“Jake would have loved the skill of the performance\, the accuracy of the impression\, and the affection it contains. Long may John continue to keep Jake’s memory alive so affectionately and skilfully\, and introduce more people to one of the most remarkable talents I ever met.” \nMike Harding\n‘Brilliant! We can’t have Jake back but this is the next best thing.’ \nRalph McTell\n‘John Watterson’s obvious joy in performing Jake’s wonderful songs has inspired him to record these Thackray gems\, many of which are receiving their first ever release. My dear friend Jake was a modest and shy man\, but I think he would be quietly grinning in approval. John’s collaborator\, Paul Thompson\, has immersed himself so deeply in Jake’s musicality that the new tunes he has written for some of the songs sound as if they were composed by the man himself. Jake lives again through this album\, which is a wonderful contribution to the canon of a unique and sadly missed artist.’ \nVictor Lewis-Smith (Producer\, ‘Jake on the Box’ BBC 4)\n‘Wonderful stuff\, bringing some of Jake’s long-forgotten gems back to life. Brilliantly performed songs\, with uncannily precise enunciation\, and accurately capturing the unique Thackray guitar style. If Jake was right\, and there really is an afterlife\, he’ll undoubtedly be looking down and giving his gruff approval.’ \nDon Black (Songwriter and BBC Radio 2 presenter)\n‘Terrific interpretations.’

SUMMARY:HUNTER DAVIES 'Love In Old Age: My Year In The Wight House' Talk and Book Signing SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:A wryly humorous memoir from Hunter Davies\, as he falls in love again in his eighties and chronicles the first year of living with his new girlfriend in their cottage on the Isle of Wight. In the summer of 2020\, Hunter and Claire escaped locked-down North London for a week’s holiday on the Isle of Wight\, fell in love with its sleepy charm – and ended up buying a Grade 2-listed love nest in the elegant Victorian seaside resort of Ryde. \nLove in Old Age tells the story of their first twelve months on the island. It is a journey of discovery to a forgotten corner of England; an exploration of the attraction of meeting new people and new places in old age\, and a celebration of flat sandy beaches. It brings together the themes of love in old age; Covid lockdown; rural escape; the anxieties of house-buying; and the history and curiosities of England’s largest and second most populous island – all bound together by Hunter Davies’s insatiable curiosity about people and places\, and his irrepressible and ironic sense of humour.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Mark Rowe
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Mark Rowe\nOn the 10th MAY (re-scheduled from 7th April)\, we’re delighted to welcome professional travel writer Mark Rowe to the bookshop to coincide with the publication of his book Isle of Wight (Slow Travel): Local\, Characterful Guides to Britain’s Special Places. A professional travel writer for over 20 years\, Mark Rowe regularly contributes to the Independent\, Telegraph and Guardian and various magazines and journals\, including Countryfile and Nat Geo Traveller. \nRowe has previously written guides to both the Outer Hebrides and Orkney\, and he’s become a bit of a specialist on Islands. \nHe first visited the Isle Of Wight as a teenager returning many times over the years as a birdwatcher\, walker and eventually parent. His research for the book required him to visit the Island over thirty times\, always searching for the less obvious\, the more subtle joys and quirky delights that we islanders enjoy here. \nThere can be no more discerning critic than a seasoned travel writer. It’s reassuring that Mark’s love and appreciation of the Island are present throughout the book. He shines a flattering light on many diverse aspects\, from food to trees\, artists\, churches. Even cemeteries get a mention. His depth of understanding of the Island’s culture and history is second to none. \nA ‘slow guide’ encourages visitors and residents alike to walk\, cycle or use public transport\, to slow down and savour the pleasures that might otherwise be just a blur through the car window. \nOur bookseller\, Paul\, praises the guide:\n“At last\, a guide book that does the Island justice\, at 312 pages there is so much great content that even the most clued-up resident will find something new to explore\, and the illustrations and maps are a delight. I’ve seen Mark talk before. He is a very entertaining speaker. In his research\, he turns over lots of stones and meets some fascinating characters. I look forward to hearing what traveller’s tales he has to recount about his work putting this brilliant book together.” \nBook Now\nIn Conversation with Mark Rowe is being held on Thursday 7th April between 7pm and 9pm at the Medina Bookshop. Tickets cost £6. Please book your ticket in advance (due to limited capacity) by calling the Medina Bookshop on 01983 300044 or visiting in person. \nDisclaimer: the venue is not licensed\, and therefore attendees are asked to bring their refreshments.
