SUMMARY:CHRIS WOOD (Now at Royal London Yacht Club)
DESCRIPTION:In a world of soundbites and distractions Chris Wood is a truth seeker. His writing is permeated with love and wry intelligence\, uplifting and challenging as he celebrates the sheer one-thing-after-anotherness of life. Tom Robinson and Chris Difford are fans while Stick In The Wheel and The Unthanks look to him as an influence. Winner of 6 BBC Folk Awards\, he’s played with The Royal Shakespeare Company and was a key member of The Imagined Village along with Billy Bragg and Martin Carthy. A wise and soulful craftsman\, his concerts are a cliche free zone.\n“Chris Wood might be the Ken Loach of songwriting. Very political\, but at the same time full of compassion\, and he grows sharper and more acute with each passing album. He’s good\, quite probably the very best we have today\, and we need him more than ever.” – fRoots Magazine \nPut on with the kind support of Red Funnel

SUMMARY:2 Poets 1 Musician\, Maggie Sawkins\, Blake Everitt and Mark Hickman
DESCRIPTION:Maggie Sawkins \nMaggie Sawkins grew up in Leigh Park\, a large housing estate north of Portsmouth\, where she began writing poetry as a child. After returning to education at the age of thirty-five\, she gained an MA with distinction in Creative Writing from the University of Chichester. She has facilitated creative writing projects in community and health care settings\, including with prisoners\, those affected by psychoactive substances and the refugee and asylum seeker community in Portsmouth. Her previous collections include Charcot’s Pet (Flarestack)\, The Zig Zag Woman (Two Ravens)\, Many Skies Have Fallen (Wild Mouse) and Zones of Avoidance (Cinnamon). Her live literature production Zones of Avoidance\, described as ‘beautifully written and uncompromising’ by the judges\, won the 2013 Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry. \nBlake Everitt \nCurrently residing in Ventnor\, his new collection of poems has a strong voice\, a deep rooting in nature\, a narrative of departure and return\, and an engagement with the world via social critique. Written on the Isle of Wight and in Southern France\, mostly during the coronavirus pandemic\, these poems are abundant with wildflowers and trees\, visual and auditory beauty\, reflection and mourning\, prophetic awareness and botanical precision. \nMark Hickman \nA well respected luthier and instrument repairer from Seaview\, it was his friend the accordionist Karen Tweed who suggested that he should have a go at writing some songs. The result is Roads To The Sea\, a collection of songs inspired by boats\, the sea\, and our wonderful local surroundings. Born close to where he now lives\, the sea has played a major part in almost everything he does\, it is a never-ending source of inspiration and this is clearly reflected in many of these songs

SUMMARY:Terence Blacker: The Shock Of The Old
DESCRIPTION:Now touring theatres throughout the UK\, the one-man show that reveals one of life’s great secrets – how to grow old with style in 2023. \nTerence Blacker has been stressing over how to grow old happily and with style ever since he got his bus pass. ‘We know about growing pains\,’ he says. ‘We never stock being told about the mid-life crisis. But what about the biggest\, toughest challenge of all – the Shock of the Old?’ \nIn his funny and perceptive new show\, he faces up to the joys and pains of the passing years with songs\, quotes\, and anecdotes. It’s as if Victor Meldrew met Tom Lehrer for a none-too-serious debate about the meaning of life. \nThe result is a spirit-lifting and timely celebration of the art of not taking the ageing process lying down – about being\, in the words of one of Terence’s songs\, ‘not quite done’. \nWith directorial help from Dillie Keane. 70 minutes. \n‘A bitter-sweet\, life-affirming show\, full of humour and terrific songs…Even if you hobble in\, you’ll leave with a spring in your step.’ Virginia Ironside \n‘The Shock of the Old blends sharp\, knowing comedy with cracking tunes. You’re in for a treat.’ Craig Brown \n‘A cracking show.’ Chorley Theatre \nPut on with the kind support of Red Funnel

SUMMARY:Phantasia
DESCRIPTION:Danish/British violinist Emma-Marie Kabanova has studied at Goldsmith’s College\, the Novosibirsk Conservatory and at the Malmo Academy of Music in Sweden. Recent concerts include appearances with the Oxford Alternative Orchestra UK\, The National Chamber Orchestra of Moldova\, and at festivals in the UK\, Hungary and Turkey. Formerly based in Moscow\, Emma-Marie was a guest Principal with the Moscow Baroque Soloists and the artistic director of Globus Music baroque ensemble; in 2019 the ensemble presented the first historically informed performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ oratorio in Russia and created collaborative projects with artists of the Bolshoi Theatre\, the Helikon Opera and with ballet dancers from the best companies in Moscow. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine Emma-Marie found it impossible to stay in Russia and returned to the UK. \nChris studied the lute first at Birmingham Conservatoire then at the Guildhall in London. During this time he set up his own chamber group\, the Farinelli Ensemble\, with whom he toured and did many concerts. Following this Chris was a freelance lutenist for several years\, highlights include 2 opera seasons with Musica nel Chiostro in Italy\, a series of concerts in Brazil as a soloist\, touring with the Uccellino Ensemble in France and many concerts and theatrical productions with groups such as the Parley of Instruments\, Fiori Musicali\, Barber Opera and Ex Cathedra. When Classic FM posted a video of Chris’s masterful perfomance of an allegro written by 18th century lutenist E. G. Baron played on the extraordinarily long necked baroque theorbo\, it became an internet sensation\, going viral several times with almost 7 million views! This evenings performance is a rare opportunity to hear the instrument played live. See the video here

SUMMARY:Georgia Shackleton (bring your own bottle)
DESCRIPTION:Georgia takes great influence from the traditional singers of the East of England such as Harry Cox\, Walter Pardon and Phoebe Smith. Traditional material she performs often stems from her native East Anglia and her own compositions are often inspired by stories from the region and the areas unique\, compelling landscape. Her solo album\, ‘Harry’s Seagull’ is a celebration of East Anglian traditional music. The album is named after a tune she wrote and dedicated to Harry Cox\, after the touching discovery that he kept a wounded seagull as a pet for a period of time.

SUMMARY:Alan Clayson Sings Chanson (BYOB)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Alan Clayson and keyboard player Andy Lavery\, has been on the road since 2011\, initially to tie-in with the most recent edition of Clayson’s Jacques Brel biography\, La Vie Boheme. Media coverage has been fulsome with phrases like ‘mesmerising’\, ‘a man possessed’\, ‘a wonderful evening by a master raconteur at the top of his game’. If much of the repertoire is from Brel’s portfolio\, Clayson delivers items by other chansonniers\, Gallic and English\, and ventures into curious but connected realms. Prefaced by a explanatory talk that is as entertaining as it is educational\, this show will appeal to both Brel devotees and those interested generally in Gallic culture.

SUMMARY:AAA Records presents Pete Astor with support from Andy Strickland (BYOB)
DESCRIPTION:‘A songwriter who never falters and is maybe even getting better with age.’ All Music\n‘The master of less is more’ The Guardian\nPete Astor led Creation Records’ groups The Loft and The Weather Prophets\, writing songs\nand releasing records that helped define the sound of the label and the emerging Indie\ngenre. He has gone on to a lengthy solo career since then; writing\, recording and releasing\nmusic on a range of labels including Matador\, Heavenly\, Warp\, EMI and Fortuna Pop. Since\n2017 Astor has been signed to Tapete Records\, home to Robert Forster\, Lloyd Cole and\nComet Gain among many reputable others. He will be playing songs from his new record\,\nTall Stories & New Religions where he is re-visits and re-imagines his songs from throughout\nhis lengthy and estimable career.\nA lifetime of listening has led me to believe that Pete Astor’s songs would have always found\na way to reach an audience. If he’d been a Californian baby boomer\, he’d have ended up in\nthe Capitol Records building in Los Angeles\, laying down late-night grooves with the\nWrecking Crew for a largely-neglected\, slightly gloomy\, pop album that’d now be worth a\nfortune. If he’d been born into post-War Britain\, earnest girls in sweaters would’ve fallen in\nlove with him\, and his songs\, in Embassy-fogged folk clubs. – Danny Kelly\, NME

SUMMARY:Larry John McNally (BYOB)
DESCRIPTION:“Larry John McNally’s songs have the plainspoken eloquence of a Raymond Carver story with fluid\nguitar work that recalls Hendrix.” \nLarry John McNally’s career began in 1981 with the release of his debut album on Columbia Records. Perhaps best categorized as a “Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist”\, he calls his blend of literary lyrics and blues/folk/jazz guitar style\, “Folk-Hendrix”. He continues to record and perform both as a solo artist and with his trio in clubs and concert venues from Tokyo to Kokomo. He is well-known in many circles as a songwriter’s songwriter. His moody\, guitar-driven\, lyrical\, thoughtful songs have been covered by artists from Don Henley (who rarely does outside songs) to Bonnie Raitt\, Rod Stewart\, Joe Cocker\, Jennifer Warnes\, the Staple Singers and Aaron Neville. LJM’s own recordings are coveted treasures among his devotees and delightful finds for those who happen upon them for the first time.

SUMMARY:Winter Wilson (BYOB)
DESCRIPTION:When Mike Harding dubbed Winter Wilson as one of the hardest working duos on the circuit\, he’d clearly done his homework. UK based\, Kip Winter and Dave Wilson have performed in Germany\, Australia\, Spain\, Canada\, Belgium and New Zealand. They’ve released a string of critically acclaimed albums\, one of the highlights being Live & Unconventional. The live album\, recorded on tour and at Cropredy Festival (video here) with folk rock icons Fairport Convention. The reviews were exceptional:- \n“If you need evidence of just how special the duo Winter Wilson is\, then Live & Unconventional delivers in abundance.” Steve Caseman\, RnR magazine \n“This is a brilliant\, exceptionally well-recorded live album that really does convince that Kip and Dave are well and truly at the top of their game.” David Kidman\, Living Tradition Magazine. \nIt is in live performance where these two really excel. Kip Winter and Dave Wilson bring a sense of intimacy to every venue\, blending superb\, often hard-hitting original songs\, stunning harmonies and musicianship with sometimes hilarious humour and tales of life on the road. Kip (vocals\, accordion\, guitar\, flute) ”simply has a voice to die for” ( John Roffey\, Maverick Magazine)\, whilst Dave (vocals\, guitar and banjo) is now rightly recognized as being amongst the top tier of British songwriters\, with his songs sung in folk clubs across the UK and beyond. Together\, their voices are sublime. \n“In 30 years of listening to folk music\, I have never heard two voices blend so perfectly.” (David Aird\, Chairman\, Glenfarg Folk Club) \nYou will laugh; you may cry. You will certainly want to see them again!

SUMMARY:JOHN BLEK (BYOB)
DESCRIPTION:Cork-based songwriter/musician John Blek is clearly a creative multihyphenate kind of guy. For the past 10 years\, he has steered a steady course from one classy music style to another\, be it the folksy ruminations of his debut\, Leave Your Love at the Door\, or the alt.country tunes of Borders (with his occasional band\, The Rats). \nBlek’s latest album swaps a spry sparseness for the musical equivalent of luxury. Recorded a year ago\, the album’s 10 tracks are textbook examples of how to imbue songs with elegance without losing sight of the often strong-minded intent that inspired them in the first place. \nThe underlying music themes for Until the Rivers Run Dry\, Blek writes in the PR blurb\, brim with “Paul McCartney moments and Scott Walker swagger”\, and while these influences are imperceptibly filtered throughout\, alongside hints of classic pop songs by other notable artists\, the most obvious reference points belong to Blek’s casual yet singular artistic grace. \nIndeed\, listening to gems of songs such as Once in a While\, Restless Sea\, Raven’s Cry\, Lyric & Air\, Come Undone\, the sublime closing track\, Floating Aimlessly\, and the rest (most of which feature featherlight strings by Colm Mac Con Iomaire and backing/co-vocals by Cathy Davey) you might wonder why on earth Blek remains one of Ireland’s best-kept secrets.

SUMMARY:CHRIS CLEVERLEY (BYOB)
DESCRIPTION:Cleverley’s boundary-shattering ‘Dream-Folk’ songwriting sits on the cutting edge of modern folk. A true guitar-man\, his elaborate alternate tunings\, percussive rhythms and ambient sound design flow beneath a visceral lyrical style inspired by the Lo-fi American Greats\, Elliott Smith & Sufjan Stevens; a curious tapestry weaved from the hazy psychedelia of the 60s folk revival and the soulful oblivion of 90s Pacific Northwest. \nDescribed as ‘impressive’ (The Telegraph)\, and ‘haunting’ (The Sunday Times) his collection of award-winning independent releases have earned him a robust and loyal\, grassroots following throughout his seven years touring the New British Folk Scene. From the fairy-light intimacy of concert venues\, to the stages of world-renowned festivals\, his outstanding musicianship and warm delivery combine to underpin the infectious draw of his unique song-writing prowess. With a visceral lyrical style explores the place of acoustic-driven music within the 21st Century emotional landscape. Shining an honest light on diverse\, arresting themes from pervasive artificial intelligence to disquieting climate emergency\, it is no wonder Folk Radio UK have called him “One of the most vital voices of his generation.” Powered by a strong social conscience\, his music serves as a vehicle for exploring constructive\, meaningful change.

SUMMARY:Jason McNiff £15 (BYOB)
DESCRIPTION:Born in Bradford\, following studying in Nottingham for his first degree\, where he developed an interest in the folk and blues guitar playing of the likes of Wizz Jones and Davey Graham; from 1995 Jason lived for some 20-odd years in London\, where\, as has been well-documented\, his finger-picking apprenticeship was honed thanks to regular exposure to Bert Jansch at Soho’s 12 Bar Club\, together with also undertaking support slots for the guitar maestro. Since moving to Hastings in 2019\, where he has established regular Friday Sundowner Sessions at The Jenny Lind pub\, he has continued to play live extensively\, including shows with ‘poetry in music’ paying homage to another of his significant influences\, Leonard Cohen. \nJason is described as Americana/Folk\, but he does something with the Americana side a lot of other artists would do well to follow; he doesn’t pretend he’s American. He’s taken the style but moved it back across the pond. \n

SUMMARY:David Ian Roberts & Henry Parker
DESCRIPTION:Henry Parker & David Ian Roberts – Chasing Light [2024]\nYorkshire and Cardiff based guitarists Henry Parker and David Ian Roberts met in 2019 when their respective folk-influenced albums ‘Silent Spring’ and ‘Travelling Bright’ were finding their way to new audiences via a series of co-headline tours across England and Wales. A shared appreciation of Nick Drake\, Ryley Walker\, Genesis and John Martyn naturally led the pair of musicians to sit down\, guitars in hand\, to improvise and compose during their free time on the road. The result of this collaboration is an album of all-original\, steel-string instrumentals which blur the lines between traditional folk\, psychedelia\, and progressive music\, bound by the beautiful simplicity of two acoustic guitars\, panned left [Roberts] and right [Parker] in the stereo field. \n‘Chasing Light’ was largely written and was entirely recorded in the Dales village of Malham\, North Yorkshire over the course of three weekend sessions in 2023. These intense periods of creativity produced eleven focussed compositions which reflect David’s long journeys north in the winter\, Chasing Light\, the limestone landscapes of rural Craven\, Wedber Wood\, and the nature themed artwork of the Pre-Raphaelite period\, The English Dreamers. The album was self-recorded\,over three long days\, utilising two microphones and requiring no overdubs; the energy of these freshly written songs being deservedly laid down in a pure\, simplistic form. \nWith Mark Radcliffe of the Radio 2 Folk Show calling Robert’s 2020 solo album ‘From The Harbour’ “a quiet masterpiece” and Prog Magazine describing Parker’s 2021 ‘Lammas Fair’ recordas “an immersive and mellifluous world” it is surely the case that ‘Chasing Light’ will capture the imaginations of folk and progressive music fans long into the future. \nHenry Parker & David Ian Roberts –\nInfluenced by the acoustic guitar artistry of the 1960’s and 70’s\, Henry Parker and David Ian Roberts play a style of folk-guitar music originally pioneered by artists such as Bert Jansch & John Renbourn and more recently Ryley Walker & Bill MacKay. Established singer-songwriters in their own right; the pair of musicians now present intricate instrumental duets from their highly anticipated debut album alongside original\, lyrical song-writing. \nHenry Parker –\n“Channelling the ghosts of Jansch and Renbourn through his fingertips\, the fluid playing and emotive singing of Yorkshire-born Henry Parker evokes the spirit of the early-60’s folk revival as ifit were yesterday.”RnR★★★★★“ \nOriginal material and traditional songs create an immersive and mellifluous world in which both the peace and isolation of nature are unfurled evoked through subtle arrangements” Prog Magazine \nDavid Ian Roberts –\n“A contemplative and understated classic already…I recommend this record to you unreservedly”. MARK RADCLIFFE – BBC Radio 2 \n“An intimate performance of astounding artistry. Lyrically his songs draw a line from Dylan Thomas to Elliott Smith\, with hypnotic melodies and guitar patterns that match even the legacies of a Nick Drake or Sufjan Stevens.” -RnR
