SUMMARY:George Boomsma
DESCRIPTION:George Boomsma is singer songwriter from Northallerton\, North Yorkshire. Having been honing his song-writing craft and live performances over the past decade\, George has been quietly gaining some well-earnt attention and acclaim. His pure voice and tumbling guitar make for a bewitching combination\, with a maturity and poetic lyricism that have left audiences around the country entranced. His songs reflect on themes from navigating relationships\, family\, self-acceptance\, grief\, finding a path forward despite uncertainties\, and the weather (mostly rain). \nHe has been invited to support and perform alongside many established artists such as Richard Thompson\, Scott Matthews\, Katherine Priddy\, Gaby Moreno\, Kathryn Williams\, The Travelling Band\, Chloe Foy\, Jefferson Hamer\, Emma Langford and Martha Tilston. On top of these live performances\, his music been featured on BBC Radio 1\, BBC Radio 2\, BBC Radio 6 Music\, RTE Radio 1 and BBC Radio Ulster. \n2022 saw George perform at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival\, A UK tour accompanying Katherine Priddy\, a slot at the acclaimed Port Fairy Folk Festival in Australia and also a trip to Kansas City for the Folk Alliance International conference. He has also been chosen as one of the four artists to be a part of this years English Folk Expo’s Artist Mentorship Programme\, which will help to support and develop George’s career throughout 2023. Other highlights include performances at Latitude Festival\, Moseley Folk Festival\, a musical appearance on UKTV’s Taskmaster and a featured track on Japanese TV show ‘Terrace House’. \nWhilst 2020 saw much of the world grind to a halt\, George Boomsma got busy\, using the time to write and record two exciting new 4 track EPs. ‘Chinatown’ & ‘What’s Left Behind’ were recorded live to tape at Echo Zoo Studios and feature not only George’s effortless vocals and masterful acoustic guitar\, but also the addition of a string quartet\, adding an extra warmth and movement to his transporting songs. The production process has carefully maintained the characteristic saturation and crunch of tape recording\, giving the tracks an exquisitely vintage sound not often heard in modern releases. Released in the following two years\, both EPs are undoubtedly a step up from George Boomsma’s previous releases\, both in terms of song-writing and production\, solidifying his place as one to watch in 2023. \n \n“A sensational guitarist and a beautiful singer-songwriter\, a name to watch.” \nMoseley Folk Festival \n\n“If it were possible for Nick Drake and Thom Yorke to collaborate\, it might sound something like this.” \nFresh On The Net \n\n“Songs of exquisite beauty\, with a voice that could melt ice caps… gorgeous stuff.” \nBob Fischer\, BBC Tees

SUMMARY:An evening of song with Larry John McNally SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:“Anyone who comes into contact with Larry John McNally’s music intimately\, knows that he is something quite special – a true songsmith and artist. Honest and inspiring. All of LJM’s recordings (and live performances for that matter) are important music listening for those serious about songs.” \n\n\n\n“Larry John McNally’s songs have the plainspoken eloquence of a Raymond Carver story with fluid\nguitar work that recalls Hendrix.”Larry John McNally’s career began in 1981 with the release of his debut album on Columbia Records. Perhaps best categorized as a “Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist”\, he calls his blend of literary lyrics and blues/folk/jazz guitar style\, “Folk-Hendrix”. He continues to record and perform both as a solo artist and with his trio in clubs and concert venues from Tokyo to Kokomo. He is well-known in many circles as a songwriter’s songwriter. His moody\, guitar-driven\, lyrical\, thoughtful songs have been covered by artists from Don Henley (who rarely does outside songs) to Bonnie Raitt\, Rod Stewart\, Joe Cocker\, Jennifer Warnes\, the Staple Singers and Aaron Neville. LJM’s own recordings are coveted treasures among his devotees and delightful finds for those who happen upon them for the first time. They are filled with songs of passion\, coming of age\, angst\, wonder\, city lights\, and more\, all with the unique ability to create both an aural as well as visual cinematic-like impression.Put on with the kind support of Red Funnel

SUMMARY:Lucy Farrell: Contemporary English Folk at its best SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Immersed in folk culture and traditions from birth via her Morris-dancing\, folk-club running 14th century family home in Kent\, the Garden of England\, Lucy studied Folk and Traditional music at Newcastle University and has gone on to pick and choose the elements of tradition that suit her\, and discard those that don’t in favour of sounds and methods that support the songs – both hers and those handed down. It’s as easy to imagine Farrell ignoring ink-stained fingers from a quill as hunched over tapping lyrics into an i-phone\, though the seeming contradictions in sensibility aren’t just on the surface. There’s an ease and confidence in the deeply personal lyrical style of her own songs\, as well as an effortless familiarity as she traverses material from hundreds of years ago. \nIn conversation\, Lucy – who is deeply funny and self-deprecating alongside her insightful and deliberate songwriting – will talk of wearing her special tweed coat and trousers and taking nips from a hip flask full of Ribena when she saw Richard Thompson in concert as 10th birthday treat\, along with her dad and maths teacher\, or of how many pints it takes to lubricate the knees to dance with her father’s Morris Troupe; or of playing totem tennis while commentating in an ‘awful Australian accent’ as part of Eliza Carthy’s Wayward Band. There’s something to those ink-stains though – Farrell is also an accomplished visual artist and crafter who will often put down her guitar and pick up a pen\, or needle and thread. \nFinding an international audience among artists like Julia Jacklin\, Emily Portman\, The Weather Station\, The Unthanks and Eliza Carthy\, the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winner Lucy Farrell is not only awarded as a renowned composer and singer\, but also as viola/fiddle/tenor guitar-player. Her work as a band member and collaborator with such artists and projects as Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band; Gluepot; Modern Fairies; The Furrow Collective; Carthy\, Oates\, Farrell & Young; and her duo work with Andrew Waite and Jonny Kearney\, respectively\, has meant releasing a collection of her distinctive solo work has had to wait – until now. \nPut on with the kind support of Red Funnel

SUMMARY:An Evening Of Song with Simon Kempston
DESCRIPTION:There are very few artists who manage to create a sound on an acoustic guitar which is distinctive\, instantly recognisable.  Simon’s complex finger-picking style\, which draws from the disparate genres of classical\, celtic and blues (amongst others) confirms he is certainly one such artist\, his subtle style providing the perfect accompaniment for his rich\, powerful and compelling tenor vocals. \nHis outstanding songs showcase thought-provoking\, inspiring poetic lyrics which often sidestep the usual themes of love and attraction\, in favour of offering crucial\, important political and social commentary.  Fascinations with architecture\, travel and English literature have all informed his impressive lyrical style\, words which can stand alone as poetry in their own right apart from the music. \nLive performances are well-known for their intensity\, Simon’s true passion for music and songs shine through in his critically acclaimed shows.  With more than a decade of international touring behind him in 31 European countries\, Siberian Russia\, Uzbekistan (the first Scottish artist to do so)\, Canada (6 tours) and New Zealand\, he has performed at a countless number of esteemed venues\, festivals\, and on a plethora of international radio and television stations. \nSimon’s latest album (his eigth as a singer-songwriter)\, saw him reignite his relationship with Ian McCalman as producer and it is his most honest\, direct and heartfelt collection of songs yet\, the perfect companion piece for these troubled times.   ‘Hand On My Heart’\, released in late 2020\, showcases his sheer talent for songwriting of the highest order. \nNever one to follow expectations\, only his prolific\, creative muse\, in early 2020 Simon released his fourth guitar instrumental album\, a four-part suite for solo acoustic guitar entitled ‘In Gratitude of Solitude’.  Immerse yourself in the soundscape of this incredibly talented performer and allow his beautifully crafted music to transport you on a uniquely Scottish journey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPut on with the kind support of Red Funnel

SUMMARY:An evening of song with John Blek SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:John Blek is much loved for his enthralling live shows full of humour\, pathos and his impassioned musical delivery. A master storyteller and a stunning fingerstyle guitar player. \nAlthough only 34 he has a catalogue of music that would represent a life’s work for many musicians. He began his solo career in 2014\, and over the last seven years has created a reputation as a singer songwriter who is sure to leave a legacy of timeless music that will speak to generations. \nAt his heart he is a storyteller\, influenced by experience and the natural world around him\, with tones of compassion and sometimes sorrow\, with a voice that sounds purposefully introspective and intimate – a voice that compels you to listen. With often haunting layers of music and lyrics he creates an incredibly atmospheric and inspirational arrangement that lingers with you long after you hear it. \nWhile Blek is a solo artist he regularly collaborates\, and indeed will write new music with collaborators in mind. As a result\, it never feels like another artist is merely gate crashing his music instead it works as a beautiful harmonious meeting of artists who understand each other. \nRecent collaborations include Kris Drever and Kit Downes who both join John on his album On Ether & Air\, Joan Shelley who embodies Laura\, one of the characters in Blek’s duet The Body\, and  fellow Corkonian Mick Flannery who duets with him on Revived a single from the 2020 album The Embers. \n“A lovely sounding thing” – Roddy Hart\, BBC \n“A force of nature” – The Irish Times \n“A master of subtlety in realms of folk-informed pop.” – The Thin Air \n‘His talent is shining brighter with every album.’ – John Creedon\, RTÉ

SUMMARY:FAKE THACKRAY Concert and Book Launch (RESCHEDULED)
DESCRIPTION:Leeds-born Jake Thackray (1938-2002) is increasingly recognised as being one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century\, a unique talent\, whose songs are full of poetry\, wit\, irreverence and humanity. He became known to millions through his regular appearances in the 1960s and 1970s on programmes such as Braden’s Week and That’s Life. During his career he appeared over 1000 times on television and radio\, performed for the royal family and toured the world. His distinctive appearance\, deadpan delivery\, talent for storytelling\, clever wordplay\, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some. Since his death in obscurity there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work. His admirers include Jarvis Cocker\, Alex Turner\, Don Black\, Thea Gilmore\, Cerys Matthews\, Benjamin Clementine and Neil Gaiman. \nJohn Watterson is the UK’s leading performer of Jake’s songs. As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention and performed at Latitude\, Cropredy and the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He has also played for Jake’s family. John has appeared many times on radio\, including Radio 4’s Great Lives\, a Radio 2 documentary on Jake presented by Cerys Matthews and Radio 3’s The Verb hosted by Ian McMillan. Most recently he appeared on TVs Meet the Richardsons with Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont. \nWith the full cooperation of the Thackray family\, John and co-author Paul Thompson have just written the first ever biography of Jake. The book is now approaching completion and will be published later this year or early next. \nThe story of Jake’s own life is a truly fascinating one\, from his humble working-class childhood in Leeds\, being brought up under the watchful eye of a devout Catholic mother and bullying father\, through to his lonely death in self-imposed obscurity in South Wales\, and a simple gravestone near the tomb of a Catholic martyr. \nIt is the story of a shy\, bright and creative boy whose life would be transformed by the Jesuits and the post-war grammar school revolution\, which would take him to one of England’s top universities. It is the story of a risk-taker who would head abroad\, fall in love with French culture and choose to live in Algeria during war-time. It is the story of an inspirational\, creative\, unorthodox teacher who wrote songs for his own amusement\, and took his guitar into the classroom. \nIt is the story of a northern provincial whom the BBC executives in London eventually recognised as hot property\, but whose relationship with show business would never be easy. It is the story of a man who turned his back on fame and ploughed a different path. It is the story of a man who was genuinely loved and hugely admired by many\, even after he let them down. It is the story of a man who left us with ninety or so extraordinary\, idiosyncratic songs which deserve to be heard\, sung and studied for decades to come. \nIt is the story of man who was a fantasist\, and a master storyteller who would never have believed that his own story was worth telling. He was wrong. \nTestimonials \nSir Richard Stilgoe\n“Jake would have loved the skill of the performance\, the accuracy of the impression\, and the affection it contains. Long may John continue to keep Jake’s memory alive so affectionately and skilfully\, and introduce more people to one of the most remarkable talents I ever met.” \nMike Harding\n‘Brilliant! We can’t have Jake back but this is the next best thing.’ \nRalph McTell\n‘John Watterson’s obvious joy in performing Jake’s wonderful songs has inspired him to record these Thackray gems\, many of which are receiving their first ever release. My dear friend Jake was a modest and shy man\, but I think he would be quietly grinning in approval. John’s collaborator\, Paul Thompson\, has immersed himself so deeply in Jake’s musicality that the new tunes he has written for some of the songs sound as if they were composed by the man himself. Jake lives again through this album\, which is a wonderful contribution to the canon of a unique and sadly missed artist.’ \nVictor Lewis-Smith (Producer\, ‘Jake on the Box’ BBC 4)\n‘Wonderful stuff\, bringing some of Jake’s long-forgotten gems back to life. Brilliantly performed songs\, with uncannily precise enunciation\, and accurately capturing the unique Thackray guitar style. If Jake was right\, and there really is an afterlife\, he’ll undoubtedly be looking down and giving his gruff approval.’ \nDon Black (Songwriter and BBC Radio 2 presenter)\n‘Terrific interpretations.’

SUMMARY:NOW TUESDAY 20th MUSIC MONDAYS with Jude Davison
DESCRIPTION:In January 2021 Jude began work on his second novel which was based on a 2008 album titled\, Circo de Teatro. The album had garnered critical praise around the world and its fascinating circus theme\, which included lots of weird and wonderful misfit characters\, just lent itself to a more full-blown story. The finished book follows many of those original character’s lives and really tries to encapsulate the community and family that a life in the circus can provide. \nTonight he’ll be interspersing acoustic renditions of these songs with readings from the book.
