What is happening on Europe’s borders, and what does the growing militarisation of migration tell us about the kind of society we are becoming?

Join writer, researcher and human rights campaigner Nathan Akehurst at Medina Bookshop for an evening discussing his compelling new book, Along the Watchtower: Dispatches from Europe’s War on Migration.

Drawing on first-hand reporting from the frontlines of Europe’s border crisis – from the forests of eastern Poland to the Mediterranean and Aegean seas – Akehurst exposes the human cost of Europe’s increasingly hostile approach to migration. Through the experiences of people seeking safety and those risking their lives to help them, he reveals a disturbing picture of surveillance, criminalisation and state violence, examining how the politics of fear is reshaping European society.

Nathan brings a particularly informed perspective to this subject. Having worked in British politics, he went on to study international development, specialising in European and US border militarisation, climate change and geopolitics. He writes widely on politics, international affairs and human rights, contributing to publications around the world, including Jacobin Magazine. He is also a volunteer in maritime search and rescue, giving him a direct connection to the realities faced by those attempting to cross Europe’s borders.

Part investigative reportage, part political analysis and part deeply human account, Along the Watchtower asks urgent questions about borders, compassion, human rights and the future of Europe.

Nathan will discuss the book, the stories behind it and the wider issues it raises, followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion.
